LOCATION
The FCO building was commissioned by Lord Palmerston in 1861, and was described by one of its architects as “a kind of national palace, or drawing-room for the nation”.
The Colonial Office, now known as the Map Room, was the office of the Secretary of state for the Colonies and later the Commonwealth. At one end is a cabinet full of maps (now copies) to consult during meetings. At the other is a fireplace, taken from the old War and Colonial office, on which Nelson and Wellington leant the only time they ever met.
