The physics behind pro-growth environmentalism
Climate change and environmental degradation are amongst the great crises of our time. The need for new, serious policy agendas is clear.
This essay argues that the anti-growth, anti-market bent of much current environmental debate is misled. Proponents see economic development won by trade as a necessary sacrifice to solve environmental issues. This essay exposes the phoney physics that underpins de-growth theories. It shows why environmentalism and growth are not just compatible, but essential partners.
The publication of this essay sparked debate within the environmentalist community, and led to this BBC radio debate between Michael Liebreich (the author) and Prof. Tim Jackson: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3cswglr
