Video Recording Available

On December 2, AEI’s Michael R. Strain convened a discussion about the future of transatlantic trade. His guests were Lord Daniel Hannan (UK House of Lords and the Institute for Free Trade) and Andrew Scheer, MP (Canadian House of Commons).

Dr. Strain began the event with opening remarks and introductions. In the panel discussion, Lord Hannan and Mr. Scheer each began with opening remarks on their countries’ economic relationships with the US and the state of trade relations under the second Trump administration. Dr. Strain then presented questions to each guest. Panelists discussed the benefits of free trade, the significance (or lack thereof) of trade deficits, and key takeaways for Americans.

The event concluded with a Q&A.

Event Description

Canada and the UK have been the closest and strongest US allies and, during the first Trump administration, important progress was made towards improved terms of trade. So far during the second term, there has been tariff uncertainty. But there are huge opportunities too, including a Tech Prosperity Deal with the UK, which is intended to lead to a comprehensive trade accord. What are the prospects for free enterprise, deregulation, and trade within the Anglosphere?

Join AEI’s Michael R. Strain, Lord Daniel Hannan, and Andrew Scheer, MP for a discussion, cohosted by AEI and the Institute for Free Trade, about the contours of the transatlantic trade relationship and the prospects for its passage.
